Cristiano Ronaldo – Portugal

The precocious winger burst onto the international scene when, at just 19, he scored two goals at Euro 2004 and was named in the team of the tournament. Ronaldo is now widely acknowledged as the world’s best player, a title supported by the 36 goals he has scored so far this season for Manchester United. This includes 10 goals in his last 11 Champions League games and 26 Premier League goals with six matches remaining.

During Euro 2008 qualification, he scored 8 goals; his pace, trickery and ability to score from anywhere will put fear into defenders across Europe. Ronaldo has scored 20 goals in 54 international games.

Fernando Torres – Spain

The 23-year-old Liverpool striker has blossomed this season, scoring 21 Premier League goals so far, as well as four in his last four Champions League appearances. Torres made his international debut at just 19 and has won 46 international caps, scoring 15 goals, including 3 goals in the 2006 FIFA World Cup.

Spain will be hoping that the talismanic striker can transfer his sparkling club form to the international stage at Euro 2008.

Thierry Henry – France

FC Barcelona’s Henry has enjoyed an exceptional international career spanning over a decade. He arrived at the 1998 World Cup as a relative unknown, but ended the tournament as France’s top scorer with 3 goals. Henry scored 3 times at Euro 2000 and twice at Euro 2004, and at the 2006 World Cup he was one of 10 nominees for Player of the Tournament.

Henry has scored a record 44 goals for France and needs just two more caps to reach 100.

Miroslav Klose

Bayern Munich’s Klose thrives on big occasions: he has scored 10 World Cup goals for Germany – 5 apiece in 2002 and 2006 – winning the Golden Boot as top scorer in 2006. He is the only player to have scored five or more goals in consecutive World Cups. Klose is well-known for his aerial ability and goalscoring instincts. He has earned 74 international caps to date, scoring an impressive 38 goals.

Zlatan Ibrahimovi

Inter Milan’s Ibrahimovi is recognised as one of the top strikers currently playing in Europe, despite failing to score a goal for Sweden in the 2006 World Cup or any of their 12 Euro 2008 qualifiers.

Since his international debut in 2001, the large, skillful attacker has scored 18 goals in 49 games for Sweden.

Luca Toni

Toni, who now plays for Bayern Munich in Germany, was a late bloomer, only debuting for Italy in 2004 at the age of 27. In the 2005/06 season, Toni scored 31 Serie A goals for Fiorentina – the first player to score over 30 goals in a season for almost 50 years.

Toni scored two goals at the 2006 World Cup, which Italy won, and has netted a total of 16 goals from 33 caps.

The Flying Eagles of Nigeria on Monday 18th April 2011 at the Dabsonville Stadium in Soweto South Africa got their campaign off to a flying start with a hard-fought 2-1 victory over the Black Starlets of Ghana. It was a match that witnessed the best of African football from both sides.

The unfortunate aspect of the game however, was the bad state of the pitch which was not helped by heavy rainfall and lack of maintenance. The pitch was bumpy and very heavy on the surface. It was difficult for the players to exhibit their skills in such situations.

The John Obuh tutored team however dictated the pace in the early minutes of play and were duly rewarded in the 17th minutes of play when Rangers F.C of Enugu forward- Innocent Nwofor latched unto a fine pull out from Abdul Ajagun to make it 1-0 in favor of Nigeria.

The Ghanaian were stung and the goal woke them up from their slumber. Their effort to equalize was resisted by the defence line-up ably marshaled by the experienced Terna Suswan. Goalkeeper Danjuma Paul who kept goal for Nigeria was called into actions on some few occasions but he was up to the task.

The defending champions however got the needed equalizer off a glancing header by striker Kwame Nsor in the 32nd minutes after some nice interchange of play at the flank. It was to remain stalemate in the first 45 minutes, as both teams could not break the deadlock.

At the resumption of the 2nd period of play, Ahmed Musa of VVV Venlo of Holland became a thorn in the flesh of the Ghanaian defence, with his beautiful runs down the right flank. James Achampong who was manning the sticks for Ghana was the busier of the two goalkeepers, as Innocent Nwofor and Ahmed Musa ensured he was on his toes in the early minutes of the 2nd half.

The game was almost heading towards a stalemate when out of nothing Innocent Nwofor found some space close to the Ghanaian flank and was getting set to make a pull out when the ball made a wicked bump and flew past the hapless James Achampong for the decisive winner. It was a rather bizarre goal, as the striker never believed his luck when the ball rested in the back of the Ghanaian net. The goal was scored in the 82nd minutes of the 2nd half.

Several attempts by the Black starlet to salvage a point from the game proved futile as the Flying Eagles defence frustrated each effort. The blast of the referee whistle at the end of the game witnessed some wild jubilation at the bench and among the players as they celebrated the acquisition of three precious points from their West African rivals.

William Gallas had a fallout with Mr .Mourinho and during the much publicized purchase of Ashley Cole, Gallas was offered in exchange as an icing on the cake.

Mourinho might have thought that Gallas did not do much but since he left, Cole has not yet quite filled his shoes. On the other hand Gallas is doing much more as a left back than Arsene Wenger might have ever dreamt of.

When rumors of Andriy Shevchenko’s move to Chelsea reached the press, everyone including Chelsea’s fans were thrilled at the thought of Andriy and Drogba teaming up. This dream just… well, just stayed a dream because we have seen nothing yet. Drogba and Shevchenko flow together the way water and fire would.

Even though this happened I myself thought the former European footballer of the year might just pull it off without Drogba but he has not adapted to the lightning quick pace of English football. We may just have to wait for a season or two before he finally clicks (I don’t think he is quite in a hurry to leave if you consider he is being paid 120,000 pounds per week).

Michael Ballack left his beloved homeland of Germany (also for the price of 120,000 pounds per week) for England to use his experience as a midfielder to help Frank Lampard in the Chelsea midfield. This seemed like another duo that would have greatly prospered together considering their talent and exposure but they just have not clicked yet. Just like Shevchenko, Ballack has also been slow to learn the English style of playing (is it something to do with their hefty wages?). For your information Ballack has already been sent off once.

The only people who seem to be consistent are the Africans who play for Chelsea. Didier Drogba has never fallen short of goals, Michael Essien is doing a good job filling in for John Terry, the young talents of Salomon Kalou and John Obi Mikel seem to be growing in stature day by day and not to forget the good job done by the Frenchman Claude Makelele.

PS: Have you noticed of late how Abromavich doesn’t seem as happy as he seemed before when Chelsea were winning every game? There have even been disturbing rumors that this is Mourinho’s last season at Stamford Bridge.

I don’t think this came as a surprise to anybody.

Avram Grant has been sacked as Chelsea manager less than a week after he led Chelsea to their first ever Champions league league appearance.

Avram Grant was never a popular choice at the bridge and his tactics came under scrutiny more than ones especially after the Carling cup loss to Spurs after taking a lead through David Drogba’s splendid free kick (although Paul Robinson should have done better).

Avram did well in my reckoning although managers are judged according to the trophies they won, and he failed to win any. He was a penalty kick away from winning the UCL but their «strong man» John Terry bottled it.

I have a feeling he would still have been sacked even if John Terry had put away that penalty. Most Chelseans are glad to see his back.

I have a feeling Peter Kenyon already has a candidate in mind but he wants the UCL furore to cool off before getting back in the news.

The job of the new manager is clear. Get rid of the unhappy players and bring in quality players to fortify the squad. The signings made at the beginning of the season by former manager Jose Mourinho were not up to scratch.

The right back position has been a problem for Chelsea so the signing of José Bosingwa is a good one especially if you consider that he can also play in midfield.

They also need quality wingers. Florent Malouda has not really settled in well. I heard Barcelona are ready to take him on so that will be good for all parties. Joe Cole is not a natural winger and should be brought back to the middle.

The central midfield in good as it is. Frank Lampard, Michael Ballack, Mikel Obi, Claude Makelele should do the job for them.

Chelsea should be back stronger next season.

Augustine Azuka ( Jay-Jay ) Okocha who was born August 14 ,1973 in Enugu ( same day as my mom difference year though is a Nigerian footballer who currently plays for Hull city in the lower league in England a move which was completed in 2007. Nicknamed Jay-Jay for his entertaining and Flamboyant style of play.

Okocha was playing football at the age of just 16 for his first club, Rangers international of Enugu, before a chance encounter whilst on holiday in Germany launched his international career. Okocha tried out for fourth division club Borussia Neunkirchen and they snapped him up.

Via Saarbrucken, he went on to join Eintracht Frankfurt in December 1991 – still before his 18th birthday – where he was to explode on to the Bundesliga scene.

Five years on, he moved to Turkey to play for Fenerbahce where he gained Champions League experience (notably in a shock win against Manchester United at Old Trafford) and hero worship in Istanbul.

In 1998, Jay-Jay became the most expensive African player ever with his £14million move to Paris St Germain.

After seeing out his contract with the French giants Okocha was available on a free transfer – hence the rumoured £3.3million-a-year wages he was rumoured to be demanding. It is testament to Allardyce’s negotiation skills that he was able to convince the midfielder to drop his high demands and join the Barclaycard Premiership outfit.

He has played at the 1994 ,1998 ( where he was named in the tournament best XI ) , and 2002 Fifa world cup and many African Nations cup Tournaments with Nigeria. He won the olympic gold medal with Nigeria in 1996 beating Brazil in the semi finals before seeing off Argentina in the final.
